The issue isn't that I need a stronger character- I turned the game up to very hard pretty early on. But they could draw out the process so that it takes much longer to max out.

The problem I have now is that the game gets you hooked on the XP system, then they cut you off. Level 20 is fine, just let me work my ass off to get there.

I'm rambling, but do you see my point?
The problem with making the intervals between leveling up longer is alot of people who want to only play through the main quest aren't going to experience very many of the unique Perks, which are pretty integral to a character. As you can tell from the VASTLY improved main quest (compared to Oblivion), making Fallout functional as a linear, average-length shooter experience was a priority of Bethesda's.

I think they cap fallout 3 so that it can hold true to the desperation vibe.

I kind of like how each character can only become great at 2-4 different skills which keeps the game experience focused and unique to each play through.

As much as I love Oblivion, it is kind of a double edge sword. I have no clue what my guy is any more cause I have been blazing through enemies leveling up everything and whoring the game until its so easy its boring. Granted that's after 200 hrs of game play with one character.

When I realized that Fallout3 does not scale and the game is Finite it actually scared me. I battle differently, I drink radiated toilet/fosset water, and I feel like im actually trying to survive. For me it is all adding up to be everything I loved about Oblivion, combined with everything I didn't fixed.

and you can always just go back and play more oblivion

Oblivion is a great choice. Its cheap, and has tons of game play (easily up to 300+ hours)

Be warned the weapon combat is kind of cheesy looking and the main story is lame. It is very much a hate it or love it game.

It makes up for it with an engrossing sense of adventure and amazing side quests.

The world is huge and the even larger with the expansion pack "Shivering Ilse's" It feels a lot like your roaming the lands of middle earth (lord of the rings).

If that theme/setting does not appeal to you just fork up the extra cash (or rent) Fallout3 and enjoy. They are the same game developer and are very similar game play experiences.

Just make sure you play both of these games like its an rpg, it may look like a hack and slash/run and gun but typically that style will be very very hard to play.

True enough. I actually completed the story last night and started up a second character for shits and giggles. I think it's probably more fun to start from scratch and experience any quests you missed without the benefit of a maxed out character.

I started by massacring everyone in Megaton. I haven't blown the bomb yet, but that's next. (evil grin face)

And it does a pretty excellent job of it. No matter how beefed up you get, you're always a "reached-for-the-pip-boy-too-slow" away from death.

Ok, i think i'm officially bored with GTA IV now. For some reason, San Andreas had me hooked for so much longer.

Now i need to find something else to use my 360 for now.
