Ok, I secured the movers. Who here had a recent cross-country move where they hired a mover that packed, drove states, and unpacked?
NYC to Charlotte I'm paying $2,262. I'm a grown adult with a 1 bedroom apt. worth of shit. (Some of it's heavy not to brag.) I think I'm just hoping to hear: "Hi Keith, I got a GREAT price for 650 miles and it was $2,26THREE!" It's so weird guessing but I think I like these guys. Or they get a $100 down payment and all my shit??!!! - Also, to be clear, I want ALL moving stories. You and your friend u-hauling your shit (I did that for a roommate driving a "van" TRUCK that I had no right to drive and it got a little scary. Ray Downs (an early NYC roommate not the one you might be thinking) didn't have a license. I think it was to New Jersey. Or another borough. Who the fuck knows where I was), you paying your friend way too much in food that you shoulda hired a stranger, etc. And thank you. |

I worked for a moving and storage company but I was on the storage side. The movers had all been in prison for various things, but there really was never a problem that I heard about.
I've driven my own stuff and other people's in rented trucks across the country (New Jersey to California, Texas to Maryland, Florida to California) and am about to do it again soon (New Jersey to California). I guess I thought there was more time, but I should have offered myself up to you earlier. I am sorry for what I am to be sorry for. |

This happened back in February but after the Supreme Court ruling I expect this number to increase. I’m so disgusted. https://www.military.com/daily-news/...ng-garage.html

I haven't moved in over 10 years, but back in '91 or '92 I helped a friend and his fiance move from Jamaica Plain in Boston to London, Ohio in my El Camino. He was drinking coffee and taking Sudafed to stay alert while we were loading the cruck/trar and that triggered a seizure. He cracked his head on a granite curbstone and we rushed him to the emergency room where he got a spinal tap.
That didn't delay the move, though. We overloaded the El Camino and he lay down on pillows behind the seats while I drove through the night. Early Sunday morning on route 84 somewhere in the mountains of Pennsylvania I fell asleep and spun out. No one was hurt. Some of their belongings got flung out of the bed, but not much. I hit a reflector that left a dent in the hood and trashed all four tires. We were stuck in some small town for a day while a local garage tracked down tires that would fit my El Camino. I don't remember what the occasion was, but we got to watch a parade go through the town. Then, with new tires, we were back on the road and made it to London without further incident. We stayed with his fiance's mother. I had taken indefinite leave from my temp job as a secretary at a well drilling company and I was in no hurry to get back. His fiance found a feral kitten on her grandfather's farm that had an advanced case of conjunctivitis. She brought it to the vet where it had to have both eyes removed. She adopted the cat and named it Oedipus. I met her cousins who had a couple kids. One of the cousins was a photographer at Sears. I felt very welcomed there and put a deposit down on an apartment. I got accepted to a college in Michigan, though, and bailed on the apartment. That was a good thing because I have no idea what I would have done for work to pay for an apartment in London, Ohio. My friend and his fiance eventually broke up and I lost touch with him. Last I heard, he was teaching English in South Korea. I dropped out of college (a couple times) and never finished. Anyway, end of story. |

Most recent move experience was last summer, helping my daughter move home after she finished her degree at UCSD. I flew (Seattle to San Diego) and stayed in a hotel for 2 nights. Flight and hotel, at least $1,000.
She had her stuff mostly packed, so that was good. We spent a couple hours packing everything into her Subaru, leaving a seat open for her dog. (Of course there was a dog, you didn't think this would be easy, did you?) The car was absolutely jammed full. Also had a roof bag full of bedding and clothes. No way to lock that, so security was a concern overnight. We set out early the next morning. Hit LA traffic around 9am. Just kill me. Over 2 hours to clear LA. Made good time after that. Multiple rest stops for gas, food, dog potty breaks, etc. Rolled into Grants Pass, OR at about 10:30pm. Quick overnight at a motel, worried all night about her stuff in the car. Pretty easy to break a window. Up early the second day and on the road again. Rolled in to Seattle around 3pm. It was a great bonding time with my daughter. Dog was better behaved than I was. Not anything I ever want to do again. Airfare, lodging, food, gas, at least $2,263. ~1,300 miles, 21 hours of driving. Hiring a mover is the right way to go! |
