Jello Biafra years ago made it clear to me why everyone who is progressive should vote. Its on one of his spoken word cds but it was something like-
the right wing conservatives are much more likely to ignore their differences and all vote as one, depending on what their religious figureheads (Newt Gingrich I think it was, or that fat Christian guy from the radio in the 90's? The guy who wanted Mickey Mouse banned because apparently sniffing a flower petal was encouraging kids to use drugs) mailing list tells them to, where the left and progressive people are more likely to sub-divide into smaller categories, fight amongst themselves and not turn up. By default conservatives can win. Biafra is particularly adamant that the real elections that matter are on a local level more then national, as the religious right love to target things like school boards, the police etc. I hope that makes sense. I don't get why the USA have their elections on weekdays and it always sounds like its a chore to vote and you have to wait hours??? In Australia its always on a Saturday and you can vote at any school. Its never taken me more then 20 minutes including getting there and going home. |

I wondered why no one could do simple mathematics while I was listening, must have been the pressure.
While I love it when Jesse is on the show, I will be voting him as the worse guest this year. Why can't the man speak into the mike? Doesn't he have a mike voice? He's supposed to know how to use mikes if he is a standup comic, isn't he? I had to keep turning the volumne of my MP3 player up and down, up for Jesse, down for Keith and Chemda. And that isn't easy while I'm walking to work carrying my stuff and an umbrella through the rain. |

i dont know about this new straw dogs but the original was more about how the dustin hoffman character reacted to the assault with brutal violence rather than the assault or the rape themselves. the trailer not only gives it away but looks like they are doing a completely different movie too. bah.

Which version of the original did you watch, Junk? I guess the censored version was more ambiguous and people thought it showed the woman enjoying it. But the uncut version makes it clear that was not the case. I just don't have the stomach for rape revenge movies. Irreversible was enough, and I don't need to see any more of them.

I heard about that "ambiguity" but i think the main issue wouldnt be that she's enjoying herself but that she is clearly shown as attracted to the guys and openly enjoying their stares, flirting with them, kinda posing for their eyes semi naked while they work at the house.... Then when the rape occurs, its edven more disturbing somehow, because its not an "army of strangers" assaulting her, but a guy she knows well, who thinks he can do it cause "she's asking for it" and when she says no, doesnt accept it and keeps going. its literally an almost seduction turning into an assault through anger. and the climax isnt really about the assault but how the main character snaps and reacts with intelligent, cold and relentless brutality to the attacks. It's about an apparently unassuming man that is quiet and passive to provocation until they attack his territory and his woman. to which he becomes even more feral and wild than the assailants. Its a subtle movie and all about the setup and the ambiguous moments. the remake seems pointless. SPOILEROUS ADD: one major moment that explains how creepily ambiguous the movies is, is in the ending (again SPOILERS). when Hoffman is fightinf to the death with the rapist, his wife manages the grab a shotgun and has the opprtunity to shoot the guy and save her husband's life. Yet she hesitates. not out of fear, she has shown that she can attack at this point. She hesitates cause, even if he raped her and he's about to kill her husband, its her ex lover and she still feels attraction for him so she cant kill him. At that point Hoffman litterally takes over and executes the guy in one of the most gruesome ways possible. And then stares at her with eyes that could pierce walls. btw, the original wasnt a horror and had no twists. i have no idea why they're selling this one that way, its like when they were pushing the "last house on the left" remake as some scary thriller.
