A few days ago Rachel said she doubted that her parents were her biological parents because there was no DNA test to prove it.
Great show. It's sad that black people can't shop in a store without white people thinking they're going to steal something. But that would still be better than the car commercial where the woman gets gas and the three boys with her go in and make a mess of the place while Beck is looking on in horror. |

That pic in the show notes isn't the Confederate flag. It's the the Army of Northern Virginia's battle flag. It was never flown over state capitals during the Confederacy.
It only became the symbol of the Confederacy, and the South in general in the 20th century. In the late 1950's, it was added to the state flag in Georgia as a protest against racial integration of schools. The battle flag continues to be flown supposedly as a symbol of ancestry and heritage, but that wasn't its original purpose. The flag that many southerners feel pride for was actually rejected as the symbol of the Confederacy in the 1800's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_...tes_of_America |

something fun Georgia did?
there was a lot of pressure to take the 'Stars and Bars' off the GA State flag. so we did. and replaced it with a design straight from the first national flag of the confederate states of america; another flag ALSO known as the 'Stars and Bars'. AND we put God on it. for extra. it's a prime example of our rebellious spirit that when pressed to do the right thing, we'll find a way to say 'Fuck You' with it. here's how i feel about it: no matter what kind of mud boggin', huntin', fishin', big hair havin' heritage belongs to it, it has been co-opted by hate groups. that's the reality.
and the silly thing is, we're the ones with the power to squash it out. if we were to say this wasn't worth the trouble it's causing our neighbors and friends, it would lose its grip and fade into extremism. it's a tremendously exciting thing to be able to do. if we would do it. which we won't if we feel at all defensive. not right or wrong, but you kind of have to deal with us like a smart victorian woman deals with a man: it has to feel like our idea. or we'll rape you, but maritally. we LOVE to dig our heels in. we will not be made to move. change is slow here for a lot of reasons. there are no simple, immediate actions to magically fix everything. it will take a couple more generations. |
