As much as I empathized with Mychal's perspective on policing and law enforcement, I don't agree that less police is answer to the current dysfunction in the U.S.
Law enforcement is necessary for the safety and security of a community. However, the recruitment and vetting of candidates seems, to me, to be a major problem faced by law enforcement agencies. I've seen a lot of bigotry and racism creep into policing and I think that the vetting processes to identify candidates who exhibit these qualities needs to be strengthened so that bigotry, racism, homophobia etc, etc are eliminated. Also, community engagement between the police and key community representatives needs to be strengthened and supported so that positive relationships can be maintained between police and communities. When you have positive relationships, you have the climate for mutual respect. The tragic situations we have seen over the past few years would surely fall away. These are only two things out of a myriad of things that need to be done but surely they're worth doing.

Cliche Guevara
Every civilized country has police, not just the US.
Does Mychal believe cops were originally slave-catchers and union-busters in every country? Is policing fundamentally different in the US, and if so, how? He seems like a smart guy but this is a lot of lazy rhetoric. |

I saw Birth of a Nation and was JUST ABOUT TO sneak into Girl on the Train but I ended up going to my friends place.
Really fucking loved Birth of a Nation, can't lie. I don't think his maybe rape and shitty personality as a hollywood person is enough to have made me boycott this ( Honestly, I hadn't even heard about this until the drama of the rape came). The movie isn't going to win him an oscar or jump start his career but I think this story is something that could be talked about more. People know the general story of Harriet Tubman but that's where the knowledge of black people fighting against slavery ends

He'll be as fine as he was. I really don't see him getting anywhere with it. Except to maybe teach acting or black history at NYU (those who can't, teach)The movie tanked, financially. The "black community" pretty much ignored or abandoned him. But i guess only time will tell
