For anybody interested in technical shit, here's some technical shit.
The Atlanta video started with some problems, such as there being only one camera, and Soccergirl having gone blind before setting it up. |

Now obviously the Atlanta video doesn't look as fancy as some of the recent three camera efforts, but think of how it could have been. You could have been staring at that one crooked shot for an hour. No matter how awesome the show was, and it was awesome, your eyes are still gonna get tired.
First thing I did was straighten out the camera, but that leaves black slivers around the edge of the video, 'cause the picture's now at a weird angle that doesn't fit. You have to zoom in a bit to cut those parts out. |

Zooming in, or cropping the image, is a pretty big no no in dv filmmaking, because cutting even a bit makes dv look like shit. With High Definition you can zoom a bunch, but this isn't quite the future yet. If we were to play the cropped video on a big screen, you'd notice it right away. Or see Dev introducing my Jersey disaster in the Crash doc -- he looks like a big scottish blur.
Luckily this is a 480 x 360 web video, so a bit of cropping isn't gonna be noticeable. Which is good, because to simulate multiple cameras, it's time for Crop City. The main one is the 3-shot of Brolo, Keith & Chemda. Most of the video uses that one, because it looks weird to zoom out to full frame once Brolo shows up. It seems out of balance, having that extra space. And then when Soccergirl arrives, she hasn't got much to say, and it seems out of balance, having that extra space. So the 3 shot rules the day. Then there are also close ups of the various duos, as seen below. Last edited by McNally; 09-11-2007 at 07:27 AM. |

I didn't use the 2 shots very often, because they were noticeably grainy. But even that can be seen as underground, and edgy. The same with the way the table is still a little crooked in some of those shots. It's not a mistake -- it's dynamic.
I didn't do anything too complicated, but I think it helped a lot. Next time Keith & Chemda are planning a live show, I'm gonna make it my business to make sure there's at least one more camera present. Cameras are small and light, I'll mail them mine if I have to. May this close the book on single camera KATG live shows. These folk deserve a thousand cameras filming them from all angles. Or, failing that, three. |

That's fuggin awesome wizardry KMcN! Sounds like a lot of work.
What did you edit with? I can't wait to see it! Downloading it soon. Sounded like a great show no matter how the tech went. Between Lamboys pix and your video all we're missing is the smell-o-vision! (oh and small alien babies - and titties!) |

I used Sony Vegas for the vid, along with Cool Edit Pro for sound and Photoshop for images. I tried using Premiere when I first started video editing, but it felt weird and alien. I picked up Vegas much more easily.
You know, if you squint a bit, that looks like Keith's real hair. Last edited by McNally; 09-11-2007 at 08:00 AM. |
