par example, this is my dear friend Shimi AKA Black Orchid. she does burlesque in San Antonio (with the austere Dino Foxx) and has a drag king persona, Buck. she's woke as fuck. and part of why you can see that drag is hellsa inclusive and a place where diversity is celebrated. the only criteria is, again, coming correct and werking.

A lot of groups have been subject to mockery in entertainment over the years, and it was even laughed at by those groups at the time. For most of US history, black people were ashamed of being black, and comedic blackface just reinforced it. People don't realize (or think about) how recent being proud of being black really is. I said that blackface still existed in Europe through the 1970's, and they defended it as funny even as the US saw it as offensive. It's similar to anyone today being annoyed at sensitivity to offensive jokes about any group. It always takes time to see things differently, and it starts with someone pointing out another perspective (like I did with my first comment). I'm only saying what I thought, and what I heard from the guest. I think they even mentioned wearing blackface at one point. The comparison didn't seem that far off to me, but I wanted to hearing people's opinions. It seemed like the guest was saying that they were annoyed that their culture was being adopted and popularized by real women. That fits with the idea that it's not mean to be an honest portrayal of women, or meant to honor them. It's exaggeration for entertainment. I'm not arguing with the people who like it, it's just something to think about. |
