368: Bobcat Goldthwait

Keith and Chemda did a great job! I have listened to the interview and reviewed it like the JFK assassination film. Near as I can tell he is just fine until Keith makes a joke about Jay More stealing his fiance. After that Bobcat kind of goes on the defensive. I guess ex-fiance questions can be kind of off-putting? In Bobcats defense I am sure he has NEVER been through an interview quite like this and was probably more than a little caught off guard. Good for Keith and Chemda for not sticking to an old style ass-kissing interview format, but I am sure it can be a little intimidating if you do not know what you are in for.

The interview was a bit odd but what really stood out to me was that Keith said "retinitis pigmentosa" correctly but stumbles on "Texas".

I think Keith and Chemda were too casual with him from the start. Not that I think they should do a regular 'fake' interview, but if the guest isn't familiar with the show, and they don't do a pre-interview, then KATG have to realize the guest won't be comfortable out of the gate, you have to work into it.

I think Bobcat was put on guard when Keith's intro only contained old projects he has "porn shame" for. Keith and Chemda were trying to be loose and open and honest with him, but they needed to first establish that they were on his side, even when they were goofing on some of his projects and mannerisms. Walking into it cold, Bobcat couldn't tell if they were being dicks and stringing him along with all that ass kissing, or real fans who were just being casual and having fun.

PS. In addition to the "porn shame" intro, here are other things that may have thrown him:

Calling his friend Perry a "fucking retard" and "a real asshole" and saying a sequel with him would never work (after Bobcat said he wouldn't do the project without him).
Reading a feedback "Isn't this guy dead?"
Talking over the guest with a horrible impression of him.
Although you don't even know if he uses, broaching the subject with "how many times have you been in rehab?"
Asking "Is it weird that [jay mohr] took your ex-fiance?"
Fucking up his "Sleeping Dogs Lie" promo/url and later the release date.
Calling his projects "Bobcat-silly".

I agree with Yarbles. It was hard to listen to because you know he's taking it wrong (and you can't blame him).

For you people that are saying "That was awesome! You really nailed him! Fuck Bobcat if he can't take it!" I think you're missing the point of the problem. Keith and Chemda weren't trying to "nail him down". They were too excited and amped about talking to him and they came on too strong. Like that retard that strokes his pet mouse to death.

I explained the interview to my husband, who is a long-time Howard listener. He says Bobcat's behavior is typical, and he has acted the same way -- suspicious, defensive, sensitive, etc. -- on more than one occasion on Howard's show.
