In Europe it is very common to get out of school and take a year off to travel before coming home and starting your 'career'...

Here, we just go straight from school to work. We're damned ignorant of other people. And how do you expect to find someone who is 'just right' for you when you limit your options to like 1/1,000,000,000 of the world's population? So try to get out and do some traveling. I'm not saying to dump your career necessarily, but save some money up and at least take an extended vacation.
